Bitsi is one of the harder personalities at the sanctuary. In addtion to cartilage and hip problems that cause her physical pain, she has bad memories of abuse in her past. One day she went off campus and we don't know what happened, but she returned with a horribly swollen head and face. She has not trusted humans ever since, with the exceptions of Hasan Amca, Ahmet and Defne. She has a thick, heavy coat that needs to be shaved in the summer to keep her comfortable, so if you see her in December, you might not recognize her in July. She shares her kennel with Maya Koca Kafa, who defers to her respectfully, but she's introverted, a dog we do not try to approach without the supervision of staff. She will drag her old bones up the hill during her free-run hours to lie in the sun with Hasan Amca and enjoy special treats he brings for her to eat. If you stand by her kennel and talk to her softly, she pays attention, and looks at you with her sad, soulful eyes. It is good for her to hear kindly spoken words, but she wants people to keep their distance. This is not the kind of dog who needs or seeks attention or wants to go on walks and play. She is a special case who needs delicate consideration from an understanding person.
