Vani is a boxer mix whose body is solid muscle, but her spirit is fragile. She has made great progress over the last year, but a horrific history of abuse can still be traced in her timidity. It was easy to miss Vani because she pressed herself up against the inside of her house to make herself invisible when strangers entered the sanctuary. As a protective measure, she hid from view so visitors thought her kennel was empty and walked on by. After hearing about the cruelty Vani suffered in her early years, her foster mother wanted to meet her. She was very apprehensive, so everyone knelt down to her level for a gentle introduction. She's a good girl and wants to please, but she remembers that humans can be capable of terrible things, so she's never quite sure what is expected of her. A simple movement like raising the hand made her cower for fear of being struck. At the slightest uncertainty, she "pancaked", dropping flat to the ground. She only trusted Ahmet and Hasan Abi, so if they started to walk away, her face bunched up into worry wrinkles over being left alone with new people. As she got to know her family, she'd go on walks, roll and play, even sit in their laps and give kisses, appearing to be happy and content. There's a short limit, however, on how much time she can comfortably spend away from her kennel. She'll start to lead you in that direction, or make a break from the leash and go home at the first opportunity. When you catch up with her, you may not see her as she blends into the shadows of her house, but you'll hear her tail wagging as it pounds on the floor. Even if she likes you, being home is best. When a hard winds blows, her expression grows serious and pensive, as if she remembers the days before BU Paws, when she endured the elements without shelter. Recently, a family visited the sanctuary, in part to overcome their discomfort around dogs. It was amazing to see Vani step out of her kennel and walk up to greet them. They jumped back in fear, at first, but Ahmet knelt down and showed them how to pet her. She welcomed the attention and they warmed to each other. Vani, who has learned something about overcoming fear, is now helping others do the same thing.
